Principles

 
Fiber optic transceivers operate based on the principle of bidirectional electro-optical conversion. The transmitting end modulates the received electrical signal using a laser (such as a VCSEL or DFB/EML) via a driver circuit, converting it into an optical signal which is then fed into the optical fiber. The receiving end uses a photodetector (such as a PIN/APD) and a transimpedance amplifier to recover the received optical signal back into an electrical signal. The entire process is managed and monitored by an onboard controller chip that communicates with the host computer.
 
High-speed modules such as 1.6T/800G have evolved significantly from this principle, with their core being the use of multi-channel parallel processing and high-order PAM4 modulation. 800G typically employs an 8-channel 100G (PAM4) architecture, while 1.6T requires increasing the single-channel rate to 200G or increasing the number of channels. These modules rely on high-performance DSPs for signal processing and error correction, and integrate complex multiplexing/demultiplexing optical engines, ultimately achieving stable ultra-high bandwidth transmission within a compact package through a precision controller.
