Fiber optic adapters are integral components used in LANs, FTTH, and optical fiber networking systems. Learn more about them in this blog post:
What is a Fiber Optics Adapter, and What Are Its Types?
Fiber optic adapters are devices used to connect two or more fiber optic cables together, such as simplex, duplex, and quad fibers. They allow seamless communication between different devices over single or large networks.
Fiber optic adapters are used in multiple areas, including:
· Internet and LAN connectivity
· Telecommunication
· Security systems
· Utility networks
Typically, fiber optic adapters are used to connect similar cables with their connectors; for example, an SC adapter will be connected to an SC connector, but there are exceptions. You can use a Hybrid adapter for connecting different connectors and cables together.

Types of Fiber Optic Connectors
There are different types and configurations of fiberconnectors out there. What you choose depends on the type of fiber cable you’re using and the equipment you’ll be plugging it into.
The most commonly used fiber optics connectors include:
LC Connector
LC or Lucent Connectors are half the size of SC connectors, featuring a 1.25mm ferrule. Their compactness makes them popular for heavier networking applications for data and telecom centers.
SC Connector
SC or Square Connectors come with a 2.5mm ferrule and a push-pull locking latch. They are the second choice of connectors for data and telecom centers. They’re the second most popular type of connector used after LC.
FC Connector
FC or Ferrule Connectors are the first ever fiber connectors to have used a ceramic ferrule. SC and LC connectors are made of plastic. Unlike them, FC connectors use a filament resembling a screw made of either stainless steel or nickel. FC connectors are very stable and can stay mated, but they’re difficult to grasp and twist if too many connectors are present. Their popularity is significantly declining.
ST Connector
ST or Straight Tip Connectors came shortly after FC. It’s commonly used because of its ease of installation and low cost. It also stays in its place and maintains its alignment. However, they are less compact. ST connectors are used for short and long-distance communication.
E2000 Connector
E2000 is a go-to choice for modern telecommunications networks. It uses a push-pull security mechanism with an automatic metal shutter to shelter the ferrule from dirt, dust, debris, and scratches. It has one of the least return losses compared to other connectors at just 0.1db.
MT-RJ Connector
Mechanical transfer registered jack has both male and female versions, making it a duplex connector. Its smaller size makes them easy to connect and disconnect.
MU Connector
It’s a smaller version of the SC connector featuring a 1.25mm ferrule and a push-pull lock mechanism.
