Polarization Maintaining PM Components can be utilized in high power optical amplifiers and optical transmission system, testing and measurement. FiberMart provided Polarizing Beam Combiner/Splitter (PBC/PBS) is a compact high performance light wave component that combines two orthogonal polarization signals into one output fiber, and also can split the incoming light into two orthogonal states. We also supply PM optical switch, PM Optical Attunuator, PM Splitter, PM Circulator, PM Isolator, PM Filter, PM Polarizer, PM Faraday Mirror and the Isolator type (IPBC/IPBS) which provides both polarization beam combining and optical isolation in one integrated component.
Introduction
Polarization-Maintaining (PM) Fiber Optic Components are critical devices in fiber optic communication and sensing systems, designed to preserve the polarization state of light signals during transmission. Conventional optical fibers are susceptible to random polarization fluctuations due to environmental factors such as stress and temperature variations. PM Optic Components utilize specialized designs and manufacturing techniques to suppress these fluctuations, ensuring high performance and reliability in polarization-sensitive applications. They are widely used in fiber optic gyroscopes, coherent communications, quantum communications, and high-precision sensing systems, making them essential elements in modern optical networks and advanced photonic setups.

Principle
The operation of PM components is based on polarization-maintaining fiber, which incorporates asymmetric stress-applying regions (such as Panda or Bow-tie structures) around the fiber core. This creates high birefringence, resulting in a significant difference in propagation constants between the two orthogonal polarization modes (fast axis and slow axis). When linearly polarized light is launched along one of the principal axes, its polarization state is maintained along the fiber. Misalignment with the axis leads to polarization crosstalk. PM components ensure precise alignment and fixation of the input polarization to the principal axis of the PM fiber, thereby maintaining stable polarization transmission.
Applications
● Fiber Optic Sensing Systems – High-precision sensors such as fiber optic gyroscopes, hydrophones, and current transformers. ● Coherent Optical Communications – Long-haul backbone communications and data center interconnects, improving receiver sensitivity. ● Quantum Communications – Transmission of polarization-encoded signals in quantum key distribution (QKD) systems. ● Laser Systems – PM fiber lasers, amplifiers, and nonlinear frequency conversion setups. ● Research & Testing – Optical measurements, polarization-dependent testing, and laboratory optical path configurations.
