What is Optical Distribution Network?

Optical Distribution Network (ODN) is an indispensable path for transmitting Passive Optical Network (PON) data and directly affects the performance, reliability, and scalability of a PON system. The ODN, an integral part of the PON system, resides as the physical path for optical transmission between the OLT and the ONT. Its reach is 20 km or farther. Within the ODN, optical fibers, fiber optic connectors, passive optical splitters, and auxiliary components collaborate with each other.

Fiber-Mart ODN structure

The ODN specifically has five segments which are feeder fiber, optical distribution point, distribution fiber, optical access point, and drop fiber. The feeder fiber starts from the optical distribution frame (ODF) in the central office (CO) telecommunications room and ends at the optical distribution point for long-distance coverage. The distribution fiber from the optical distribution point to the optical access point distributes optical fibers for areas alongside it. The drop fiber connects the optical access point to terminals (ONTs), achieving optical fiber drop into user homes. In addition, the ODN is the very path essential to PON data transmission and its quality directly affects the performance, reliability, and scalability of the PON system.

Fiber-Mart provides a comprehensive series of ODN products to deliver fast ODN customization services to enterprises worldwide. As an experienced fiber network solution leader in the world, Fiber-Mart has deep understanding and rich experience in PON construction and provides series of ODN products, including ODF, FDT, FAT, optical splitter, fiber optic closure and other accessories (fiber adapters, fiber optic pigtails, fiber patch cables/cords).

Optical Distribution Frame (ODF)

Optical distribution frame is used for connection and patching of optical cables, mainly used as the interface between optical transmission network and optical transmission equipment and between optical cables in access network of optical fiber subscribers. Here is a 19 inch rack-mounted ODF with 72 fibers capacity for example.

Fiber Distribution Terminal (FDT)

Fiber distribution terminal is used for achieving connection and grooming of optical cable. It is mainly suitable for optical cross-connecting point between optical transmission network, optical transmission equipment and access network for the fiber subscribers. A fiber distribution terminal consists of fiber distribution cabinet (such as cross connection cabinet), passive optical splitter and fiber termination box with splice tray. Here is an example of a cross connection cabinet with 9 splice trays (108 fibers) capacity and a wall-mounted fiber termination box with 24 fibers capacity.

Fiber Access Terminal (FAT)

Fiber access terminal is located at the user access point of optical distribution node for connecting the optical distribution cables and drop cables, direct connection, branching and protection of optical fibers. Fiber termination box, or fiber optic terminal box is such a fiber access terminal device. Here is a wall-mounted fiber termination box with 24 fibers capacity for example.

Passive Optical Splitter

Passive optical splitter, a branched of passive fiber, is a passive equipment to connect OLT and ONU. Its function is to distribute down-link data and integrate up-link data. Two kinds of fiber optic splitters are popular used. One is the traditional Fused Biconical Taper (FBT) coupler splitter, the other is the Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) splitter, which is compact size and suit for density applications. Both of them have their respective advantages to suit for different requirements.

Fiber Optic Splice Closure

Fiber optic splice closure is mainly used for connecting and branching in the optical fiber network. It is suitable for protecting of all kinds of optical fiber straight-through and branching. The fiber optic splice closure is used with outdoor fiber optic cables to provide space and protection for the fiber optic cable splicing and joint. Here is a vertical/dome splice closure with 12 fibers capacity for example.

Fiber Optic Adapter
Fiber optic adapter (sometimes is called fiber optic coupler) is used to provide a cable to cable fiber connection. There are two kinds of fiber optic adapters which are mating sleeves and hybrid adapters. Mating sleeves are used to connect the same type fiber optic connectors, while hybrid adapters are cable adapters used to connect different kinds of fiber optic connectors.

Fiber Optic Pigtail

Fiber optic pigtail is a fiber optic cable end with fiber connectors at one end while leave the other end no connectors. The connector side can be connected to the equipment and the other side can be spliced with optical cable fibers. Fiber optic pigtails are used to achieve accurate mounting for precision alignment of optical components. There are various fiber optic pigtails with different connectors such as SC, ST, FC, LC, MT-RJ, SC/APC, FC/APC, E2000 and.
