Optical Laser Source

Fiber Optic Laser Source are a necessity for performing fiber optic network testing to measure the fiber optical loss for both single mode fiber cable and multimode fiber cables. They are designed to cover a variety of wavelength ranges to suit all optical testing needs and usually the optical light sources are used with the fiber optic power meter to test the fiber system loss. Light sources are offered in a variety of types including LED, halogen and laser. Usually the optical light source is used with the fiber optic power meters, they act as an economic and efficient solution for the fiber optic network works. Fiber-Mart offers handheld fiber optical light source and laser light source. Welcome to our store. Contact us at [email protected] or Live Chat with us. Buy other fiber optic products on Fiber-Mart. Introduction

The Fiber Optic Laser Source is a fundamental testing instrument designed for the accurate measurement of optical loss in both single-mode and multimode fiber networks. It functions as the stable, calibrated light emitter essential for characterizing the performance of fiber links, components, and systems. Typically paired with a fiber optic power meter, it forms the cornerstone of cost-effective and efficient field and laboratory testing solutions. Fibermart's portfolio includes versatile handheld models offering a variety of wavelength ranges and light source types, providing definitive tools for network certification, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Principles

A Fiber Optic Laser Source operates as the controlled transmitter in an optical loss test set. Its core function is to launch a known and stable level of optical power into one end of the fiber link under test. For insertion loss testing, the source is connected to the link's input, and a power meter is connected to the output. The power meter measures the received power level. The difference between the source's launched power and the meter's received power, minus any reference calibration factors, is the total link insertion loss, which includes fiber attenuation, connector losses, and splice losses.

A more advanced application is Optical Return Loss (ORL) testing when combined with a circulator or back-reflection test function. The source emits light into the fiber, and an integrated or separate detector measures the total power of light reflected back towards the source from all points in the link (e.g., from connectors, mechanical splices, or the fiber end). This quantifies the back-reflection level, which is critical for high-speed and analog systems. The accuracy of all these tests fundamentally depends on the wavelength stability and power consistency of the light source.
