Defination
FDDI – Fiber Distributed Data Interface, which is a 100 Mega-bit technology using a timed token over a dual ring of trees. FDDI standard was developed by the American National Standards Institute - ANSI X3T9.5 standards committee. FDDI was designed to run through fiber cables, transmitting light pulses to convey information between stations, but it can also run on copper using electrical signals.
Application
FDDI can transport data up to 100Mbps in a local area network (LAN) that can extend in range up to 200 kilometers (120 mi). FDDI is often divided into metropolitan area network (MAN) range. An extension to FDDI, called FDDI-2, supports the transmission of voice and video information as well as data. Another variation of FDDI, called FDDI Full Duplex Technology (FFDT) uses the same network infrastructure but can potentially support data rates up to 200 Mbps. Work is underway to connect FDDI networks to the developing synchronous optical network (SONET).
