Some Tips About Fiber Media Converters

What Is A Fiber Media Converter?

A fiber media converter is a simple networking device which makes it possible to connect two dissimilar media types (defined by cable, connector types and bandwidth). Media converters convert electrical signal to light signal and vice versa, are important in interconnecting fiber optic cabling-based systems with existing copper-based, structured cabling systems. By making this transition, media converters allow organizations to extend old legacy networks with the latest technology, instead of being tired to what the network was started with. They basically used as network extenders to extend the distance from several hundreds of feet to several thousands meters. Fiber Media converters are perfect for linking networks between campus buildings.

How Does A Fiber Optic Media Converter Improve Your Office Efficiency?

With the volume of data that is handled by a modern office increasing exponentially every year, it is vital that with the help of media converter your network is able to handle the work efficiently and quickly.

A typical media converter is made up of two transceivers or MAU (Media Attachment Units) that can transmit data to and receive data from each other, and a power supply. Each MAU comes with a different industry standard format connector to join different types of media. The basic concept is that one media type goes in and another comes out. All connectors are up to date with the latest IEEE standards and protocols. Media converter can be used in any part of the network, connecting to network switches, hubs, routers and even direct to computer servers.

Media Converter Types

Fiber media converters support many different data communication protocols including Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, T1/E1/J1, DS3/E3, as well as multiple cabling types such as coax, twisted pair, multi-mode and single-mode fiber optics. Media converter types range from small stand-alone devices and modular chassis converters to high port-density chassis systems that offer many advanced features for network management.

Stand-Alone, Modular chassis-based Converters

According to the platform type, media converters can be divided into stand-alone, modular chassis-based converters.

Stand-alone converters are designed to be used where only one or two conversions are needed. They are perfect for converting and extending single twisted pair network interfaces over fiber optic cabling, especially where space is limited. The modular chassis-based converters are often used in large MDF or IDF locations where multiple fiber links are converted to UTP.

Managed and Unmanaged Media Converters

According to the network to points, media converters can be divided into managed fiber optic media converters and unmanaged fiber optic media converters.

Managed Ethernet optical media converter: support carrier-grade network management.
Unmanaged Ethernet optical media converter: Plug and Play, to set the electrical port mode through hardware DIP switch.

Managed media converter solutions include standalone media converter, fiber media converter cards, and media converter chassis. The transmitting distance could reach 2km up to 100km and the data rate of the managed media converters covers 10/100M TX to 100Base FX, 100M TX to 100Base FX and 10/100/1000M TX to 1000Base FX and 1000M (dual fiber and WDM-single fiber).

Unmanaged or "plug and play" Ethernet Media Converters are easy to install and trouble shoot. The disadvantage with unmanaged converters is when a network issue is occurring, there is no way to access the Ethernet Media Converter to see exactly what might be causing the issue. Many chassis based Ethernet Media Converter solutions feature an option for an SNMP card that shows statistics and overall health of all the media converters in the chassis. This is helpful when you have multiple chassis filled with Ethernet Media Converters in a large data center. Additionally, there are standalone Ethernet converters on the market today that support SNMP management.

Managed media converters are more costly but do offer additional network monitoring, fault detection, remote configuration and more. Unmanaged media converters allow for simple communication with one another but does not provide monitoring, fault detection and setting up network configurations. The unmanaged option is a great choice for newbies and if you want a plug and play fiber network cable installation.

Applications Of Media Converters

Media converters can be used anywhere in the network from computer servers to workstations. Media converters make the configuration of computer network very flexible. They enable upgrading the network to better and faster technology, such as fiber optic cabling, without requiring a full network retrofit.

Media converters are used to extend the network. Fiber optic media converters integrate optical fiber which support much longer cable than with standard twisted pair copper cables. For example, 10M and 100M copper cabling networks have a limit of 110 meters versus 2000 meters of optical fibers.
