Single fiber strand solutions are the easy way for fiber optimization, instead of using two dedicated strands, installed fiber plant and one for receiving and the other for transmitting them can double the capacity, each strand carries a bi-directional signal. Fiber plant capacity can double the per fiber ROI with no need for more physical fiber. These solutions have been incorporated for many years in Fiber-Mart’s optical multi-service product line. Recent technological advancements in Fiber-Mart have yielded many new variations of these solutions.

 

BENEFITS OF USING SINGLE FIBER STRAND


Instantly doubles network capacity: Single fiber strand increases the capacity of the fiber by simultaneously operating at more than one wavelength, transmitting and receiving on a single strand. Increases reliability: By decreasing the number of connections or end points in a network, the number of potential issues is decreased. A customer may also choose to use a single fiber to increase redundancy in the network. Decreases cost: The costs associated with installation and maintenance of the fiber are reduced. Decreasing the total amount of fiber results in a reduction of overall labor costs. Construction costs are avoided since you are increasing the capacity of existing fiber versus installing additional fiber.
 
 

 

FIBER OPTIC SOLUTIONS OVER SINGLE FIBER STRAND

 

CWDM/DWDM MUX & OADM over Single Fiber Strand


The single fiber solution to 8/16/22 wavelengths CWDM/DWDM MUX is finished by the Fiber-Mart accessory devices such as the Bidi CWDM/DWDM products, it is suitable for any combination of between 10G and 10G client interfaces. This solution uses a single mux, whatever CWDM MUX or DWDM MUX with 8 or 16 channels, and half of the mux used for transmission and another for receiving. As for the 44 wavelength single fiber solution, it used a single fiber strand to pass up to 22 client interfaces by mapping them into 44 different wavelengths traveling in the opposite direction of the fiber simultaneously.

We know that traditional fiber optical data transmission needs a coupler of fibers to transmit data and they need more optical and cost source, but Fiber-Mart's CWDM and DWDM solution over a single fiber strand to transmit and receive reduce the cost of investment and renting.  Detailed connection we can see from the figure. One prominent feature is the availability of single strand fiber products. Single strand fiber allows the user to simultaneously send and receive data on one strand of fiber. Single fiber WDM support for OADM and other topologies (point to point, bus, ring, etc.). Here is a practical example from Fiber-Mart. For achieving the RF wireless coverage of using the minimum amount of the fiber strands, Fiber-Mart used two 9/125μm single mode fiber strands while others use four 9/125μm singlemode fiber strands. We all know that fiber has to be leased in order for the customer to have access to the strands. The solution is achieved by WDM technology, because of light sources will not collide with each other to make many wavelengths run in same fiber strands, and at the same time, all the optical wavelength travel through the same single fiber strand. Combined with the OADM technology, each fiber receiver unit channel and remote repeater unit only allow dedicated wavelength and other optical wavelength of filtering with configuring the system and it allows a single fiber strand. Care also has to be taken that the same optical wavelength does not exist within the same single fiber strand.

 

SFP & SFP+ Transceivers over Single Fiber Strand


Bi-directional (BiDi) SFP/SFP+ transceiver provides a solution up from 10Km up to 60Km on one strand of singlemode fiber, the upstream transceiver module connects to any IEEE standard Bidi "downstream" devices for long distance optical communications. The BiDi SFP/SFP+ Transceiver Modules operate on a single strand of standard SMF, and a 1000BASE-BX-D transceiver is always connected to a 1000BASE-BX-U transceiver with a single strand of standard SMF. The communication over single fiber strand is achieved by separating the transmission wavelength of the two devices. A WDM splitter will be integrated into the BiDi SFP & SFP+ to split the 1310nm and 1550nm light paths if one direction transfers 1550nm channel and another receives 1310nm signal. At the same time, BiDi SFP support DOM function according to the standards of the industry. Of course, without the DOM function, you will pay less costs.

Fiber Media Converters over Single Fiber Strand


Single fiber media converter, also referred to as BiDi or simplex media converter, can make the customers to extend the Ethernet connections across a single strand multimode fiber link. Traditionally, multimode fiber media converters are the "dual connector" or "dual fiber". Well, for reducing the costs, WDM technology is used for available fiber, WDM uses separate transmit and receive frequencies to communicate a bi-directional signal on a single fiber strand. Therefore, fiber capacity is instantly doubled without deploying more cable; reliability improves as the number of end point connections decrease and labor costs associated with maintenance and installation are reduced.

 

Fiber Media Converter single fiber solution

It allows data to be transmitted over a single strand of fiber by using a pair of media converters, each transmitting and receiving data at different wavelengths. The figure shows that one converter transmits at 1310nm and the other unit transmits at 1550nm. Therefore, when selecting a pair of single fiber converters users must choose one unit that transmits at 1310nm and one unit that transmits at 1550nm.


SUMMARY


For a mount of optical networks work over a pair of fibers which is required to achieve full duplex operation. However, single strand fiber allows a full duplex transmission over a single (bi-directional) fiber strand. It will be quite useful for people who have limited fiber management and limited budgets.
