Principles

 
A fiber optic connector operates on the principle of creating a low-loss, temporary junction by precisely aligning the core of one optical fiber to the core of another fiber or an active device's port. The core component is the ferrule, a rigid sleeve (usually ceramic) that holds the stripped and cleaved fiber end with extreme accuracy. When two connector ferrules are mated within an adapter, their polished end-faces are brought into direct physical contact.
 
This precise physical contact minimizes the air gap between fibers, which is essential to reduce Fresnel reflection and insertion loss. For APC connectors, the end-faces are polished at an 8-degree angle, which directs any remaining reflected light out of the fiber core to achieve even higher return loss, critical for analog video and high-speed digital systems. The connector's external housing and latching mechanism (threaded, push-pull, or snap-in) ensure the ferrule alignment is maintained reliably against vibration and accidental disconnection.
