Fiber Attenuator

Fiber Attenuator, or fiber optic attenuators, are used in optical communications to reduce optical fiber power at a certain level. Generally, the fiber optic attenuator types are classified by connector types and attenuation levels. A common version is the female to male plug type bulkhead attenuator which has a connector at one side and a adapter at the other side. Fiber-Mart provides optical fiber attenuators with various connector types, such as FC/SC/ST/LC/E2000, available with APC or UPC. Our fixed fiber attenuators can be with different attenuation levels from 1 dB to 30 dB (step by 1 dB), while the variable optical attenuators (generally used as in-line fiber attenuator) can be with a range of 0 ~ 60 dB. Introduction

Fibermart Fiber Attenuator is a precision passive device engineered for the controlled reduction of optical power within fiber optic networks. It serves as a critical tool for managing signal levels to prevent receiver overload and optimize system performance. Available in both fixed and variable configurations, and compatible with industry-standard connectors like FC, SC, ST, LC, and E2000 in APC or UPC polishing, this component offers a definitive solution for fine-tuning power budgets in telecommunications, test environments, and data center applications.

All Types of Fiber Attenuators

Features

● Fixed attenuators(FC, SC, ST, LC, and E2000) with precise set values from 1 dB to 30 dB (in 1 dB steps).

● Variable attenuators(in-line VOA attenuator, Handheld voa attenuator) offering adjustable dBs from 0 dB to 60 dB for flexible power control.

● Available both UPC and APC polish types to match specific system requirements and minimize back-reflection.

● A connector on one end and an adapter port on the other, enabling simple inline insertion between two patch cables or directly at equipment ports.

● Engineered for accurate, stable attenuation values with low insertion loss to ensure reliable signal management.

● Supports custom orders for specific attenuation values, connector combinations, or unique form factors to meet specialized project and testing needs.

Principles

An optical fiber attenuator functions by deliberately and precisely introducing a known, controlled amount of signal loss into an optical path. This is distinct from unwanted loss from poor connections. Fixed attenuators typically achieve this using a neutral-density filter or a doped fiber segment that absorbs a specific, predetermined amount of light power. The value is set during manufacturing based on the material's properties.

Variable optical attenuators (VOAs) employ dynamic mechanisms. A common principle is the gap-loss method, where the input and output fibers are aligned with a small, adjustable lateral or longitudinal gap between them. The degree of misalignment, controlled manually via a dial or electronically, dictates the amount of light coupled from one fiber to the other, thus varying the attenuation. Other VOA types may use movable filters or electro-optic elements. The core goal of both types is to reduce optical power to a desired level without distorting the signal's other characteristics, ensuring optical receivers operate within their optimal dynamic range.

Fiber Attenuator Aplication Scenarios

Applications

● Receiver Protection and Testing: Preventing photodetector saturation in sensitive optical test equipment (like OTDRs and power meters) and network receivers.

● System Power Budget Management: Equalizing power levels between different channels in WDM systems or across multiple receiver inputs.

● Signal Simulation for Link Certification: Emulating the attenuation of a long fiber span during the installation and testing of network links.

● Telecommunication Network Calibration: Fine-tuning signal levels in central offices and headends to ensure optical transceivers operate within specified power thresholds.
