With a variety of advantages, development and application of SONET/SDH have gradually been a hot topic and more and more popular with people. SONET/SDH transceiver module is a kind of the transceiver modules which is compatible with the SONET/SDH and ATM standard and widely used in many fields, especially for packet-over-SONET/SDH (POS), optical networking, and ATM applications. On this topic, Fiber-Mart today is going to talk about the SONET/SDH SFP transceiver module solution.
SONET/SDH
Synchronous Optical Networking (SONET) and Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) are a set of related standards for synchronous data transmission over fiber optic networks. SONET is the United States version of the standard published by the American National Standards Institutue (ANSI). SDH is the international version of the standard published by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). In general, the international equivalent of SONET is synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH). Today it is a widely deployed, mature technology used in implementing high-speed, large-scale IP networks. It combines high bandwidth capacity with efficient link utilization, making it a major building block for accommodating fast-growing IP infrastructure both in the core and at the edge. SONET/SDH has a base transmission rate of 51.84Mbit/s with speeds up to 2488.32Mbit/s and defines optical carrier (OC) levels and electrically equivalent synchronous transport signals (STSs) for the fiber-optic based transmission hierarchy. The following table lists the hierarchy of the most common SONET/SDH data rates:
| Optical Level | Electrical Level | Line Rate (Mbps) | Payload Rate (Mbps) | Overhead Rate (Mbps) | SDH Equivalent |
| OC-1 | STS-1 | 51.840 | 50.112 | 1.728 | - |
| OC-3 | STS-3 | 155.520 | 150.336 | 5.184 | STM-1 |
| OC-12 | STS-12 | 622.080 | 601.344 | 20.736 | STM-4 |
| OC-48 | STS-48 | 2488.320 | 2405.376 | 82.944 | STM-16 |
| OC-192 | STS-192 | 9953.280 | 9621.504 | 331.776 | STM-64 |
| OC-768 | STS-768 | 39813.120 | 38486.016 | 1327.104 | STM-256 |
Other rates (OC-9, OC-18, OC-24, OC-36, OC-96) are referenced in some of the standards documents but were never widely implemented. It is possible other higher rates may be defined in the future.
Packet-over SONET/SDH (POS)
Packet over SONET/SDH (PoS) is a highly scalable protocol that overcomes many of the ineffi-ciencies of ATM, while providing legacy support to internetworks with existing SONET/SDH architectures. PoS provides a mechanism to carry packets directly within the SONET/SDH synchronous payload envelope (SPE) using a small amount of High-Level Data Link Control (HDLC) or PPP framing.
ATM Over SONET
ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) is a dedicated-connection switching technology that organizes digital data into 53-byte cell units and transmits them over a physical medium using digital signal technology. ATM may also be transported over SONET/SDH which is known as ATM over SONET/SDH. There are two options to accomplish this: embedded ATM and Hybrid ATM. In Embedded ATM, cells are mapped in the SONET/SDH payload of a STS/STM frame. In this case, ATM cells are completely transparent to the switching network elements (NE). NEs require SONET/SDH traffic management only. In Hybrid ATM, SDH/SONET (VT) traffic and ATM traffic are combined into the same SONET/SDH bearer. However, network elements (NE), or nodes, have the visibility of ATM cells. They separate the SONET/SDH traffic from the ATM and they route each one to their respective switching fabric. After they have been switched, they may be recombined into a hybrid payload. NEs require both SONET/SDH and ATM traffic management.
SONET/SDH transceivers
SONET/SDH transceivers are applied in duplex telecommunications links to transport voice, data and digital video; they may be employed in wireless backhaul applications in support of TDMA, CDMA, GSM, EDGE, LTE, and WiMAX infrastructure equipment. SONET/SDH models cover the standard range of data rates extending from OC-3/STM-1 through OC-48/STM-16. The SFP models include the 2-wire digital diagnostic interface that enable a system to monitor and control the optical transceiver in real time. OC-48/STM-16 models are available in multi-rate format that can service FEC systems operating up to 2670Mbps or XAUI systems operating up to 3125Mbps.
Fiber-Mart SONET/SDH SFP Solution
Fiber-MART Multi-rate 2.67Gb/s transceiver modules are compatible with the SONET/SDH and ATM standards, The SFP modules have a fully OC-48 SONET compliant interface between the SONET/SDH photonic layer and the electrical layer. These SONET/SDH SFP transceivers provide multi-rate capabilities and can be used from OC-3/STM-1(155 Mb/s) up to 2.67Gb/s, such as OC-3/STM-1 (155 Mbps), OC-12/STM-4 (622 Mbps), and OC-48/STM-16 (2,488 Gbps) data rates applications. There are three main wavelength 850nm, 1310nm and 1550nm that correspond to black, blue and green bale clasp for a wide range of transmission distance, eg. 2km, 10km, 40km, 120km etc. All of our SONET/SDH SFPs can be designed to be compatible with the major brands, such as Cisco, Juniper, Foundry, Extreme etc. In addition, OEM/ODM order is available.
