Principles

 

A PLC Splitter operates using integrated optical waveguides fabricated on a silica-based chip. Unlike fused couplers, it utilizes photolithographic semiconductor manufacturing techniques to etch precise branching waveguide paths onto this chip. When an input light signal enters the chip, the waveguide network passively and evenly divides the optical power among the multiple output channels. This planar technology ensures the split ratio is virtually insensitive to the input light's wavelength, allowing a single device to support multiple transmission bands (e.g., 1310nm, 1490nm, 1550nm) simultaneously, which is essential for triple-play services in PON systems.

 

The result is a device with exceptionally uniform output power across all channels and minimal variation with temperature or polarization changes. For specialized applications requiring control over the light's polarization state, Polarization Maintaining (PM) PLC Splitters are available.
