Principles
An OS2 singlemode patch cable operates on the principle of guiding a single light mode through an extremely narrow (9μm) core of ultra-pure glass. This small core size is the key differentiator from multimode fiber. It restricts the path of light, allowing only the fundamental mode to propagate directly down the center of the fiber. This eliminates modal dispersion—a significant cause of signal degradation over distance where different light paths arrive at different times.
The result is a signal that can travel tens to hundreds of kilometers with very low attenuation and high bandwidth, as the light pulse remains coherent and intact. The cable acts as a passive, low-loss bridge.
