OTDROTDR, short for optical time-domain reflectometer, is an optoelectronic instrument used to characterize an optical fiber. It can offer you an overview of the whole system you test and can be used for estimating the fiber length and overall attenuation, including splice and mated-connector losses. It can also be used to locate faults, such as breaks, and to measure optical return loss. Our OTDRs are available with a variety of fiber types and wavelengths, including single mode fiber, multimode fiber, 1310nm, 1550 nm, 1625 nm, etc.. And we also supply OTDRs of famous brands, such as AFL Noyes OFL & FLX series, JDSU MTS series, EXFO FTB series, YOKOGAWA AQ series and so on. OEM portable and handheld OTDRs (manufactured by Fiber-Mart) are also available.
Introduction
The Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) is an essential optoelectronic instrument engineered for the comprehensive characterization, certification, and troubleshooting of fiber optic networks. It provides a detailed, graphical overview of an entire fiber link, enabling precise measurement of length, overall attenuation, splice and connector losses, and optical return loss. As the definitive tool for locating faults such as breaks or bends, OTDRs are indispensable for network installation, maintenance, and quality assurance. Fibermart supplies a versatile range, including models from leading brands and proprietary OEM portable units, supporting all standard fiber types and wavelengths to meet diverse testing requirements.
Features
● Measures key parameters including total fiber length, end-to-end attenuation, and loss at events like splices, connectors, and splitters, providing a complete optical link profile. ● Accurately locates and identifies faults such as breaks, severe bends, and poor connectors, displaying their distance and loss with high resolution for efficient troubleshooting. ● Available for single-mode and multimode fibers, for 850um, 1300nm, 1310nm, 1550nm wavelengths to perform double-wavelength testing and monitor live fibers. ● Supplies OTDRs from renowned manufacturers (AFL Noyes, EXFO, VIAVI, YOKOGAWA) as well as fully functional portable and handheld OEM units manufactured by Fibermart, with build-in OPM, VFL, Microscope functions . ● Features intuitive software for analyzing trace data, automatically generating detailed pass/fail reports and certification documents for network documentation.
Principles
An OTDR operates on the principle of optical time-domain reflectometry. It functions like an optical radar for fiber. The instrument injects a series of short, high-powered laser pulses into one end of the fiber under test. As these pulses travel down the fiber, a small fraction of the light is continuously scattered backwards due to Rayleigh scattering (from microscopic glass density variations) and reflected at discrete points due to Fresnel reflection (at glass-air interfaces like breaks or connectors).
The OTDR's sensitive receiver detects this backscattered and reflected light. By precisely measuring the time delay between launching the pulse and receiving the return signal, and knowing the speed of light in the fiber, the instrument calculates the distance to each event. The steady decay of the backscatter signal creates a trace slope that indicates the fiber's attenuation per kilometer. A sudden drop in the trace indicates a loss event (splice, bend), while a sharp spike indicates a reflective event (connector, break). Analyzing this trace allows technicians to visualize the entire fiber's health and performance.
Applications
● Fiber Network Installation and Certification. ● Routine Network Maintenance and Monitoring. ● Fault Location and Emergency Restoration. ● Quality Assurance for Splicing and Connectorization. ● Fiber Inventory and Documentation Management.
